Dear REDFISH Families,

I love snow, and the first snowfall of the year is always a special one. With that in mind, it was nice to wrap-up Week 8 with a fresh dusting on the hills surrounding REDFISH…

Following are a few highlights, heads-ups, and housekeeping items as we look ahead to Week 9 at REDFISH…

D.E.A.R. REDFISH

On Thursday afternoon, students dropped whatever they were doing in the moment and picked-up a book to take part in the annual ‘Drop Everything and Read’ (DEAR) challenge. To help facilitate the event, older and younger students were paired as reading buddies. It was a great vibe in the building as the readers gathered in the hallways around our library to read together.

REDFISH BOOK FAIR

The theme of reading was reinforced as our own Teacher-Librarian, Mrs. Heddon, ran a stellar book fair throughout the week. The school would like to extend a HUGE ‘thank you’ to Mrs. Heddon for all the hours of time and effort she invested in setting up and running the event! (She clearly has a background in sales and staging.) Thank you also to the parents and grandparents who volunteered to make the event possible... and to all who came out to support the event through purchases. The book fair brought in over $2000 in sales which translates directly into over $600 in fresh literature being pumped back into REDFISH classrooms and library shelves.

PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES

It was great to see so many parents in the building for parent-teacher conferences this past week. Thank you to our teaching faculty who made the sessions both possible and accessible for families. Teachers will continue to follow up in the days ahead with families who were unable to attend.

SCHOOL PHOTO RETAKES

As a reminder, school photo retakes are scheduled for Thursday, November 2. Please sign up for photo retakes here by Monday, October 30.

MORNING BUS TIME CHANGE (‘SHARK’ BUS)

Please see the following update from SD8 TRANSPORTATION for those whose children ride ROUTE 19 (i.e. the ‘SHARK’ bus) in the morning…

Dear Parents,

We routinely evaluate bus runs for student load, route times and arrival times at schools.

It has been identified the RT 19 (SHARK) has been consistently running late to the catchment schools that it services in Nelson.

It is extremely important that the bus arrives at the catchment school, with enough time for the students to be ready for the start of classes.

To rectify the noted late issue, we will be altering the depart time from the Hume school stop.

The present depart time is 7:04 am, the new depart time will be 7:00 am.

Please be at the stop 5 minutes prior to the listed depart time.

StrongStart BC FLYER

Registration is now open for StrongStart BC programs across SD8. Please the flyer attached to the parent email for registration details, dates, and times.

FREE CLOTHING AVAILABLE

The Balfour Covenant Church has a collection of clean clothing, shoes, winter jackets, toques, etc. that families can access for free. If in need, please do not hesitate to reach out to Judy at office@balfourcovenant.com or 250.229.4412.

The Procter Community Society (Est 1938) is hosting a ‘Haunted House’ Halloween event at the PROCTER HALL on Tuesday, October 31, 2023 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM.
